The
Masks of Obalufon
The ability to
create art is a gift from the gods according to ancient Ife's mythology. The
Mask of Obalufon, above, is about 600 to 800 years old, honoring Obalufon
Alayemore, the Yoruban deity of metal casting. It is considered to be the most
perfect work of pure copper ever cast. In trying to learn about the
culture behind the creation of this work of art, I stumbled on an old out of
print book of poetry, Myths of Ife, by John Wyndham. Published in 1921,
it is the history of the creation of the world, the gods, and humanity, and the
creation of the sacred city of Ife, as told by the the Orni of Yorubaland and
chief priest of Ifa. - J
